Signs you need demolition

  • 01A shed or playhouse is leaning, rotted or full of termites
  • 02An old deck is soft underfoot or pulling away from the house
  • 03A cracked patio or walkway is lifting and tripping people
  • 04A block wall is leaning or in the way of a new project
  • 05An outbuilding has to come down before a sale or a new build
  • 06You need a structure gone and the ground left clean

What we tear down

We handle the smaller demolition jobs homeowners and property owners run into most, where bringing in a large demolition company doesn’t make sense:

Sheds, playhouses and small outbuildings, wood or metal, with whatever is still inside them.

Decks, patio covers and fences, including posts and footings.

Concrete: patios, walkways, slabs, steps and old driveways, broken up and hauled.

Block and brick walls, whole walls or openings, like the one in our photos.

The Bobcat E45 mini excavator pulls a structure down in pieces we can load right away, so the teardown and the haul happen together. The hauling side takes the concrete and debris to recycling.

Permits, utilities and asbestos

Ventura County’s Building and Safety Division says that, generally, all buildings and structures need a building permit, with exceptions for some small projects such as small storage sheds (Ventura County building permit information). Whether a teardown needs a demolition permit is their call in unincorporated areas, and the city building department’s inside a city, so ask before a structure comes down.

Anything with power, gas or water running to it has to be shut off and capped first. Before digging out footings or slabs, California law requires calling 811 at least two working days ahead so the utility lines are marked (DigAlert).

Older buildings may have asbestos in pipe wrap, siding, floor tile or popcorn ceilings. The City of Ventura’s demolition procedure asks for a permit from the Ventura County Air Pollution Control District for asbestos work (City of Ventura demolition procedure). That part needs a licensed abatement company before we start.

After the teardown

When the structure is gone, the ground is usually rough: footings, broken concrete, roots and debris. We pull the footings, rake out the rubble and leave the spot ready for what comes next.

If the next thing is a new shed, a patio or a level yard, our grading page explains how the ground gets leveled and packed.

How it runs

How a demolition job runs

Estimate

Look at the structure

Photos or a visit tell us how it is built, what is inside and how the machine gets to it.

Before

Power, gas and water off

You or your utility shut off and cap anything running to it, and 811 marks the lines before any digging.

Teardown

Down in loadable pieces

The excavator takes it apart so it can be loaded as it comes down.

Haul

Gone and cleaned up

Wood, metal and concrete go to their yards, and the ground is raked clean.

Cost

What decides the price of demolition

Small demolition is priced on the size of the structure, what it is made of and how much material has to be hauled away.

What it depends onWhy it matters
Size and materialA wood shed comes down faster than a concrete block wall.
Concrete and footingsSlabs and footings take machine time and are heavy to haul.
What’s insideA shed full of junk is a cleanout and a teardown in one.
AccessWhether the mini excavator can reach it, or it comes down by hand.
Permits and utilitiesAny permit, and caps on power, gas or water lines, are done before we start.

Questions

Demolition questions

Not sure what your job needs? Call or text photos any hour and we will tell you.

Call (805) 794-2842
Can you tear down a shed and haul it away?

Yes. Wood and metal sheds and small outbuildings, with everything inside them, taken down and hauled in the same visit.

Do you remove concrete patios and walkways?

Yes. We break out patios, walkways, slabs and steps and haul the concrete to recycling.

Do I need a permit to demolish a shed?

Sometimes. In unincorporated Ventura County, the county’s Building and Safety Division decides; inside a city, the city’s building department does. Ask them before the work starts.

Can you take down a block wall?

Yes, whole walls or openings cut into one. Walls that hold back soil need a look first, because the ground behind them may move.

Do you take down bigger buildings?

Call us with the job. We will tell you straight if it is one for us.
