Signs you need junk removal

  • 01The garage holds more boxes than cars, and nobody has opened most of them in years
  • 02You are moving out, moving in, or clearing a rental between tenants
  • 03A family member’s house needs to be emptied before it is sold
  • 04An old fridge, washer or water heater is sitting on the side of the house
  • 05A remodel left a pile of cabinets, drywall and boxes in the driveway
  • 06The couch or mattress is too big for the trash cans and too heavy to move alone

What we haul away

Most of what fills a house, a garage or a yard can go in one trip. We take the heavy, awkward and bulky things people can’t fit in a car or the curbside cans:

Furniture: couches, sectionals, recliners, mattresses and box springs, bed frames, dressers, desks, tables, chairs, cribs and patio sets.

Appliances: refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, water heaters and air conditioners. Anything with refrigerant goes where the refrigerant can be taken out first.

Garage and storage: boxes, shelving, old tools, exercise machines, bikes, toys, holiday decorations and everything a storage unit collects.

Yard and outdoor: green waste, branches, old fencing, play sets, broken furniture and the pile behind the shed.

Renovation leftovers: old cabinets, carpet and pad, doors, drywall, tile and the boxes new things came in. Larger remodel and construction loads are on our debris removal page.

Cleanouts: garages, houses, rentals and estates

A cleanout is junk removal for a whole space at once. A garage, a spare room, a storage unit or an entire house gets emptied in one job, and whatever you want to keep stays where you say.

Estate cleanouts are often the hardest, because there is more than furniture to sort. We go at your pace: you mark what stays, what goes to family and what can be donated, and we take the rest. Move-out and rental turnovers are faster, because the goal is a bare, swept unit before the next people move in.

Nico’s Hauling ASAP is family owned, so when you call about a cleanout, you talk to the family doing the work.

What we can’t take, and where it goes instead

Some things can’t go in a junk load by law, because they are hazardous or need special handling. Ventura County runs drop-off programs for them, mostly free for residents:

Paint, chemicals, pool supplies, pesticides, motor oil and batteries: these are household hazardous waste. The county and several cities hold collection days and run drop-off sites by appointment (Ventura County hazardous waste programs). Unwanted paint can also go back free to stores in the PaintCare program.

TVs, monitors, computers and programmable small appliances: these count as e-waste. The county says a microwave is a good example of a small appliance that counts (Ventura County e-waste page). We can take e-waste in a load to a place that accepts it, or you can drop it off yourself.

Asbestos and anything that might contain it: old pipe wrap, some popcorn ceilings and some old flooring need a licensed abatement company before anyone hauls them.

If you are not sure about something, send us a photo. We tell you before the trailer shows up, not after.

Where your junk goes after it leaves

Not everything goes to a landfill. Metal, cardboard, clean wood, green waste, concrete and dirt each have a place that takes them for recycling, and much of a typical load can be kept out of the landfill.

Appliances go to recyclers who remove the refrigerant, oil and mercury switches first. California law says these materials must come out before an appliance is crushed or shredded, and can’t be dumped (California DTSC appliance fact sheet).

Mattresses can be recycled for free at participating sites through California’s Bye Bye Mattress program, paid for by a fee charged when a new mattress is sold (Bye Bye Mattress, Ventura County Public Works).

Green waste goes to composting. Since SB 1383, California treats food and yard waste as organics that belong in the green cart, not the trash (Ventura County organics recycling).

Our what happens to your junk after it leaves follows a typical load from the driveway to each of these places.

Ventura and Santa Barbara County, any hour

We take junk removal calls across Ventura County, from Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks to Ventura, Oxnard, Ojai and the Santa Clara River Valley, and up the coast into Santa Barbara County. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including emergency calls, like a ceiling that came down or a unit that has to be empty by morning.

Your town may also offer bulky item pickup through its trash service, often a few items a year at no extra charge. Our guide to free bulky item pickup in Ventura County lists who to call in each city. When that pickup is weeks out, or the pile is bigger than a few items, that is where we come in.

Questions

Junk removal questions

Not sure what your job needs? Call or text photos any hour and we will tell you.

Call (805) 794-2842
Do I need to be home for junk removal?

Not always. If the junk is outside, in an open garage or in a unit you can give us access to, we can often do the job while you are away. For anything inside the house, someone needs to let us in and show us what goes.

Can you take an old refrigerator or freezer?

Yes. We take refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners to places that remove the refrigerant before they are recycled, which California requires. Empty the food out first and we handle the rest.

Do you take mattresses?

Yes, mattresses and box springs. Many can be recycled through the state’s Bye Bye Mattress program instead of going to the landfill.

Will you take paint, chemicals or motor oil?

No. Those are household hazardous waste and have to go to a county or city collection program. We can point you to the one for your town, and we can take everything else in the same visit.

Can you take things from inside the house or upstairs?

Yes. We carry items out from any room, upstairs or downstairs, and take apart big pieces that won’t fit through a door.

Do you take junk from businesses and rentals?

Yes. We do cleanouts and turnovers for offices, shops, rental units and property managers, the same as for homeowners.
